Flexible working checklist and letters

Flexible working can be agreed on an ad hoc and informal basis. If an employee wants longer term, more formal arrangements, this is a change in their terms of employment and so should be considered in detail, formally agreed and recorded.
In this document we explain what flexible working is and give you a checklist of things to think about. We also give you a template flexible working policy and template letters to respond to an employee who requests flexible working on a formal basis.
Use this document with your internal employees only. Please note that this document has been updated to reflect legal changes to the right to request flexible working implemented in Great Britain on 6th April 2024.
