Department for Transport Announces £100 Million HGV Parking and Driver Welfare Grant Scheme to Improve HGV Driver Facilities

24.11.2022

The Department for Transport (DfT) has this afternoon announced a £100 million commitment towards improving the roadside facilities of HGV Drivers. The investment aims to ensure that HGV lorry drivers benefit from safer, more secure rest areas and adequate showering facilities.

From todaytruck-stop and road service operators can bid for a share of the £32.5 million match-funding pot from the government. To be eligible for the scheme, applicants must demonstrate that their proposed project can be completed by 31 March 2024. Funding is likely to be allocated to operators who propose projects in any of the three areas:

  • Driver welfare facilities: including toilets, shower facilities and rest areas.
  • Security for drivers: including lighting systems, CCTV and monitoring equipment, and secure fencing.
  • HGV parking capacity: including spaces and layout.

The £32.5 million is in addition to the £20 million announced earlier this year from National Highways to improve roadside facilities and security for lorry drivers.

For further access to guidance about the HGV Parking and Driver Welfare Grant Scheme and to complete an application form, please click here. Applications must be submitted online through the Government website and completed by 24 February 2023.

Department for Education’s invitation to tender to train new, road-ready drivers

The Department for Education (DfE) has launched a funding and employment opportunity to recruit new HGV drivers, actively looking for training providers and employers to work with across the logistics sector. DfE is currently seeking suppliers – training providers - who will receive funding from the department to deliver affordable end-to-end training opportunities for anyone aged 19 and above in England. A key aspect of the Skills Bootcamp will be strong employer engagement as successful suppliers will be required to make contact with local employers to provide guaranteed interviews for candidates. If you’re interested in bidding for this funding opportunity, we strongly encourage visiting and registering on the department’s e-tender portal to start your process. The deadline for the tender is 12pm on 22 October 2021 and the contract duration is from November 2021 to March 2022. This comes in response to the acute staff shortages that the industry is experiencing and after significant REC campaigning for accessible, affordable trainings for new workers in the industry.
