REC comments on Reform UK’s commitment to abolish IR35 rules

Responding to Reform UK’s commitment to abolish IR35 rules, Shazia Ejaz, REC’s Director of Campaigns and Research, said:

“The next government must overhaul the off payroll working rules because these are still overly complex and do not place sufficient emphasis on the end-hirer to provide their assessment and take responsibility for it. The current system fails to support the use of flexible labour and works unfairly in many cases.”

With a 10% surge in demand for staff across the economy, and the labour market restricted by shortages, we could see a 1.2% fall in expected GDP and productivity by 2027 – costing the economy anywhere between £30 billion and £39 billion every year. This figure is just short of the entire current defence budget, or two whole Elizabeth Lines.
