Secretary of State sets out plans on Unfair Dismissal

Government and campaigns

The REC has received a letter from Jonathan Reynolds, Secretary of State for Business and Trade, setting out the government’s key principles for their proposed rules around Unfair Dismissal. The government’s current intention is that employees will be protected from unfair dismissal from day 1, but that employers are able to use a “lighter-touch and less onerous approach” to dismiss people who are not right for a role within the first 9 months.

The Secretary of State’s letter also makes it clear that the specifics of this policy are subject to consultation before it is finalised and confirmed. There are currently plans for a series of roundtables to discuss this policy, ahead of a formal consultation process later this year. Dates for these are unconfirmed, but REC will keep members informed of any developments and timelines on these as we are made aware.
