Written by Kate Phillips

Welcome to National Apprenticeship Week for 2016! This week is about celebrating all things apprenticeships, so with that in mind, we asked some of our recruitment apprentices to share their stories.

We know that recruitment is a career of choice, and an apprenticeship is a fantastic way to enter or extend knowledge of the industry.

Throughout the week, we'll be featuring a story a day, so keep an eye out and let's all celebrate our recruitment apprentices!

We've created a new apprenticeships infographic too, which you can view here, and also on our Pinterest.

Today's story is from Bethany Cook-Naisbett, trainee consultant at HR GO Recruitment.

What interested you in becoming an apprentice in recruitment?

I was interested in doing an apprenticeship in recruitment as it was an extremely good opportunity to get a career behind me. I love the fact by doing an apprenticeship i could 'Earn and Learn' at the same time.

What do you enjoy most about being an apprentice working in recruitment?

I love being in a working environment and learning at the same time. Opening my eyes to a new industry.

What's the number one thing you've learned while undertaking your apprenticeship?

I have learnt a lot doing my apprenticeship:

  • Good customer service skills
  • Computer skills
  • I have achieved my level 2 NVQ and now have my Cert RR title
  • Everything that comes with my role as a resourcer
  • Learning to work as part of a team
  • Working under pressure

What kind of goals do you have for your career?

I started off as an apprentice in 2014, now in 2016 I am a Trainee Consultant. In 2017 - 2018 I am aiming to be a service consultant, then work my way up to be a consultant and see what happens from there.

What one thing would you tell yourself if you were just starting out?

Not one day in recruitment is the same so each day be prepared.

Would you recommend an apprenticeship in recruitment to others?

Yes, as I have told my managers I really believe the apprenticeship scheme is a great opportunity. In this day and age it is hard to be given an opportunity in the working environment, as an employer will ask for 'experience', however, when just leaving school many people do not have work experience. The apprenticeship scheme is a fantastic way to get a qualification, work experience and a career behind you. I feel I am now settled for life and am extremely grateful for being given this opportunity to prove myself.
