The importance of thorough candidate referencing checks

As a business you expect to incur general running costs like renting premises, marketing and IT expenses, however perhaps one of the most important and valuable things you find yourself paying out for is your team of reliable and trustworthy employees.

When the decision is made to take on a new employee within your business you aren't just committing to the cost of paying that employees salary for the foreseeable future, you're also taking on the cost of advertising the role, agency fees/ recruiter costs, training both internally and externally and getting them set up for the role, whether that's just their new office set up or added extras like a company car and phone. 

Providing your new employee meets your expectations and goes on to work for you successfully these costs can balance themselves naturally, however in a world of increasing chicanery and misrepresentations it's never been more important to be thorough when checking on the qualifications and references that your hopeful candidate claims to be in possession of. It is worth bearing in mind that studies such as the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), predict that every time a business replaces a salaried employee, it costs 6 to 9 months’ salary on average. A survey carried out last year by CV Library revealed that an astounding 92.5% of British applicants have stated that they have gotten away with a falsification on their CV, and an even more surprising 71.6% confirmed that they were offered employment as a result.

The survey also found that 31.4% of candidates would be willing to misreport the dates of their previous employment and 27.1% about gaps in their CV, all things that can be unveiled by in depth employment checks carried out by the right people.
