Weekly Roundup of REC Media Coverage

Government and campaigns

Another busy week here at REC HQ as we continued our push our Training for Temps campaign. In response to Boris Johnson’s Telegraph column on Monday which focused on apprenticeships, Neil Carberry sent a letter to the editors of major newspapers urging the broadening of the Apprenticeship Levy to allow temps better access to training funds. The letter was printed in both the Telegraph and City AM.

The other big news this week focused on the new Finance Bill, which included draft IR35 legislation. Despite our recommendations and those of many other organisations, the government has decided to go ahead with implementation of the rules in the private sector from April 2020. We responded publically, with Tom Hadley saying that “The last thing private sector businesses need at this time of Brexit uncertainty is rushed or poorly-designed tax rules that add further uncertainty to an already fragile business landscape.” Our response was picked up by many of our major trade publications, including Global Recruiter, Personnel Today, Recruiter and Talint International. We have drafted a legal update with what you need to know here.

One final piece which appeared this week was a feature in People Management magazine, discussing the impact of Brexit on the labour market and recruitment. As well as referencing our latest JobsOutlook, it also featured the CEO of REC member GI Group, who shared how flexible, agile recruiters are helping to find solutions to the current challenges and prepare businesses for growth.

That’s all for now – have a good weekend!
