Government and campaigns
One major news story has occupied a lot of our time in the comms team this week, and that was the government’s announcement that Freedom of Movement for EU citizens would end immediately after we leave the EU in a no-deal scenario.
As we know from our research into the jobs market, there are skills shortages across the UK in many different sectors, and it is likely that cutting off free movement would make this situation worse. Following the release of the ONS migration stats on Thursday, we released a statement and Tom Hadley was mentioned in this BBC News story, saying that this had “added to the growing uncertainty and unease” for businesses. Tom’s statement was also picked up by local newspapers throughout the UK, as well as MailOnline and sector titles like Personnel Today and Global Recruiter.
Tom was also invited to talk about immigration, the labour market and the problems with ending Freedom of Movement on LBC radio last night. You can listen back to his interview with Clive Bull here, by clicking on yesterday’s programme and scrolling to exactly 40 minutes in.
