Government and campaigns

We live in epic times don’t we? With Brexit uncertainty this autumn, and big changes coming on IR35 and the government’s Good Work Plan in spring, there is quite a lot on for recruiters! All of this at a time when economic uncertainty means many clients are wondering whether to push ahead with their plans.

Lots to navigate, and we are here to help you with practical support and a strong voice for recruiters. So far this autumn we’ve flown the recruitment flag at all the party conferences, demonstrating the good you do every day in opening up opportunities for people, and helping businesses grow. Whether it’s Labour’s shorter working week or the Conservative plan for big rises in the minimum wage, there is greater appetite than ever before from the politicians to be interventionist on jobs. The REC has to be loud and proud in making sure they start from an understanding of what the industry does and its massive value.

We’ve also been on the road all over the country meeting members and helping with 2020 preparations. A particular highlight was bringing Greg and Chris Savage to over 350 REC members last month, talking about how to succeed in the new world of recruitment. As well as standing up for you in Government and the media as we navigate big changes, the REC will be focussing on bringing members more of this kind of business support to really help you prosper. Our new business growth series is the next instalment of that plan. I hope you can join us. With only around a third of hires going through the sector at the moment there is still huge growth potential – even in a tougher economy.

Brexit - How to prepare when you don’t know what you’re preparing for?

If you don’t feel ready for Brexit, I don’t blame you. Recruiters are juggling a vast number of priorities in extreme uncertainty. Preparing for something that’s months down the road is difficult when you don’t know what’s happening in just three and a half weeks. While we are waiting, checkout our Brexit hub, go through our checklist for a no-deal and get ahead.

At the REC, our view is that a General Election is all but inevitable at some point between the end of November and January (let’s just say I am glad our awards night is Wednesday the 27th not Thursday 28th November..). We’ll be using our campaigns plan to make sure we are a noisy and effective voice on jobs during the campaign. From NHS procurement to employment regulation – we will make sure your voice is heard.

IR35 guidance has already been delayed by all the Brexit shenanigans - but the Finance Act needs to be passed by December for the change to happen in April. We’re talking to the Treasury about this – but it is still very likely the change will happen in April, meaning we need to prepare now. As REC members you have access to a wealth of guidance, information and support in our IR35 Hub on how to get IR35 ready. It’s never too late to start. Get booked on one of our upcoming IR35 seminars, which have been getting rave reviews. They now include a run down on the Good Work Plan too, so it’s two for one!

What about the Good Work Plan?  Are you ready?

Good Work Plan II (the sequel) is released in exactly six months’ time, with big changes for us, especially around written statements and the ending of the so-called “Swedish Derogation” in the Agency Work Regulations. Visit our hub for guidance.

To finish on a positive note, why not blow off some steam and join me next month in celebrating the best of recruitment at the IRP Awards? A huge congratulations to all those who have been shortlisted for what is always a fantastic night. You’re doing the sector proud! www.irpawards.com

All the best to you and your business,

Neil Carberry
