REC responds to report showing risk to UK jobs from AI

Press releases

Commenting on today’s IPPR think-tank report that up to eight million UK jobs at risk from AI unless government acts, REC Deputy Chief Executive Kate Shoesmith said:

“AI is a powerful tool for recruiters and those involved in workforce planning and development. Some employers are using AI well, such as in scheduling, sourcing candidates, background checks and personal development plans. But we are only at first base in what AI can do for the labour market.

“We can help maximise the benefits of AI if employers and government work together, particularly on skills development and compliance.

“It’s a fast-moving area - one where we need people proficient and trained in using AI as it is now but also given the skills to adapt to future developments. So, the education system needs to be built around these core employer needs, with flexibility to fund appropriate short-course training, as would come from a more flexible Apprenticeship Levy.

“Recruitment was an early adopter of AI and further possible gains must come about in the right way. That is why we have worked with government for some time on guidance for responsible AI in recruitment. Collaboration on best practice, identifying the pitfalls and setting ethical parameters is the best way we have for rooting out the risks around bias and discrimination, lack of scientific validity, concerns about legal compliance with UK legislation and digital exclusion.”
