REC Report on Jobs shows Technology is the fastest growth sector
The REC and KPMG Report on Jobs – published today – shows that demand in the Technology recruitment sector grew at the fastest rate in January than any other sector.
The latest survey findings indicated a further improvement in job market conditions at the start of 2010.
Permanent staff placements increased for the sixth months running during January. Although weaker than December’s peak, the rate of growth remained marked.
Contract staff billings also rose strongly, with the pace of expansion only slightly below the previous month’s two-and-a-half year high.
Commenting on the news, Jeff Brooks, Chair of the REC’s Technology Sector Group said:
“I am delighted to note that the demand for staff and contract workers in the IT sector continued to grow in January. This is a consolidation of the trend we saw emerging in the last quarter of 2009. Our members are telling us that this increased activity is marked and ongoing.
"It is very heartening to see that companies are investing in IT and see it as a driver of growth as the economy returns to growth in 2010. Already we can see some candidate shortages emerging and the key will be to try to get a balanced market where the supply of talent is similar to demand. There is a real opportunity to increase the skill base in the next few years which the government needs to grasp.”
