Agencies have key role to play in addressing domiciliary care abuses, says REC

Released on 10 September 2007

Peter Cullimore, Chair of the REC’s Nursing & Social Care Sector Group, says: "Organisations involved in the provision and monitoring of domiciliary care services must continue to work together to address the sickening examples of bad practice identified by CSCI.

"One thing that the CSCI comments underline is the crucial role that recruitment agencies in this sector must play in effectively vetting all workers that are sent to work with some of the most vulnerable people in our society.

“In addition, the majority of cases of abuse in private homes are by family members and care workers can play a key role by reporting such instances. Recognising and promoting the work of high performing agencies must go alongside ongoing activities to identify and sanction any agencies not meeting their obligations and any individual workers betraying the trust of clients".

As the representative body for the UK recruitment industry, the REC is in regular dialogue with CSCI and also monitors compliance with the Code of Professional Practice that all REC members must comply with.

The REC Nursing & Social Care Sector Group includes specialised agencies in the domiciliary care sector.
