Employers give a resounding thumbs-up to recruitment agencies

Released on 22 January 2010

Employers have given a huge boost to the recruitment industry with more than nine out of ten expressing satisfaction with the agencies they use, according to the REC's January JobsOutlook.

A total of 91 per cent of employers surveyed said they were happy with the service delivered by their agencies.

Commenting on the levels of satisfaction among employers, Roger Tweedy, the REC’s Director of Research: “This verdict is particularly encouraging after one of the most difficult years on record in the jobs market. It shows that recruitment agencies have punched above their weight in maintaining the highest standards despite having to make their own cutbacks in staff.

“This is an extremely positive indication of  employers’ confidence in the industry and how they will continue to use recruiters for sourcing their staff as the jobs market gains momentum again this  year. “

Other key findings in January’s JobsOutlook include:
  • The REC Confidence Barometer calculated from all answers given in the survey lifted another point as employers stay committed to growing their permanent workforces this year
  • Overall business and consumer confidence decreased slightly as economic uncertainty prevails
  • One in ten employers are planning to slightly increase their permanent workforces in the next three months while one in five say they believe their permanent workforce will rise in the long term (next 12 months)
  • However the proportion of agencies expecting their use of temporary workers would stay the same in the short term has fallen to 70 per cent this month from 77 per cent the previous month
  • Just under two-thirds of employers (61 per cent) indicated their use of agency staff was likely to stay the same – down five per cent on the previous month
  • The majority of employers said communications and interpersonal skills were the ones most urgently sought among both new permanent staff and temporary workers

Results in JobsOutlook are based on a sample of 200 employers each month and presented on a three month rolling basis (600 responses). It is designed to complement the REC’s Report on Jobs published in conjunction with KPMG, which tracks the actual number of placements on a monthly basis.
