REC responds to PM's call for review into NHS overseas staff

Released on 5 July 2007

Commenting on this move,  Anne Fairweather, the REC’s External Relations Manager, said: “Recruiters have been concerned for some time that CRB checks do not necessarily cover offences committed outside of the UK.  One way to tackle this complex issue is to be more stringent when issuing foreigners with permits to work in the UK.

“Gordon Brown's suggestion that the Home Office will vet candidates for the Highly Skilled Migrant Programme more thoroughly is a step in the right direction. Ultimately it is for the Border and Immigration Agency to decide whether it is appropriate for someone to work in the UK. Agencies and employers responsibility lies with checking that a candidate is suitable for the job.

“Recruiters of locum doctors will continue to ask migrant workers for police checks from their country of origin, in addition to CRB, GMC and the qualification checks that they make.

“In addition to this, all REC medical agencies follow a strict code of practice and NHS PASA framework agencies are audited by NHS PASA."
