Extension of free childcare knocks down barrier to employment says REC

The REC has today (Thursday) welcomed the roll-out of provisions for free childcare for 50,000 workless parents who are undertaking training leading to work.

Joint research carried out by the REC and Adecco in December last year found that lone parents’ flexibility was limited by the availability of childcare.  Since then, the REC has been highlighting this issue to the Government.

Commenting on the roll-out, Kevin Green, the REC’s Chief Executive, said: “These provisions will break down one of the barriers preventing workless parents getting into work and is a step forward to making it easier for recruitment consultants to secure them employment”.

Kevin Green continued: “The Government must recognise that the private recruitment sector plays a vital role in getting people who can work into work. The industry has specialist knowledge of a range of specific industries and occupations. Their knowledge can be utilised to help foster employment progression and identify career routes and training needs.”

Judith Ivers, Chair of the REC Childcare Sector Group, added: “The initiative is a great step forward. Childcare is a profession but should also be affordable, so giving this provision will hopefully make it easier for workless parents”.
