REC responds to immigration consultation

The consultation considers the compilation of occupational shortage lists which will be used as part of the roll-out strategy of the Government’s new points based system. Tier one was introduced in February 2008 and currently applies to migrants in the UK on the highly skilled migrant workers programme. The occupational shortage lists will be used to determine the need for skilled workers classified as tier 2.

Commenting on the response Anne Fairweather, Head of Public Policy said “we are concerned that the MAC’s definition of a ‘skilled’ worker could be too narrow, especially in sectors such as construction, social care, live-in care and hospitality. We also call on the MAC to have an open dialogue with trade and professional associations as they know about shortages in specific sectors. Recruiters, for example, are in an excellent position to spot these shortages as they are on the front line of the labour market.”

The REC responded to this consultation after consulting its members through an online survey, sector group meetings and the Employment Policy Committee.
