EU insurance ruling is 'bridge too far', says Chair of REC Diversity Forum

Released on 3 March 2011

This week's ruling on unisex insurance pricing from the European Court of Justice has been met with a strong response. Beyond the specific implications for female drivers, there may be ramifications for perceptions of the overall equality agenda.

Commenting on the wider implications of the ruling, Sarah Gordon, Associate Director of the Sammons Group and Chair of the REC's Diversity and Inclusion Forum says:

'This is a 'bridge too far' in terms of a literal and inflexible approach to equality regulations. Murmurs of 'political correctness gone mad' will be heard all the way to Brussels. The real downside is that this may impact on perceptions of equality initiatives in other areas where we do need to continue making progress - particularly improving diversity, equality and inclusion in the workplace.

"Recruitment professionals are already playing a pivotal role here and will continue to help businesses move from good intentions to tangible action."

Respect for equality is a key principle of the REC's Code of Professional Practice. Other initiatives include the REC/Jobcentre Plus Diversity Pledge to which over 600 agencies have signed up.
