Technical, Engineering or Construction Contractor of the Year

Les Cornick
Nominated by Kinetic Plc, Manchester

Oldham Maintenance Engineer Les Cornick is in the running to be crowned One in a Million, the title given to the UK’s top temporary, contract or interim worker.

Les has won the TEC Contractor of the Year category of the One in a Million Award.

Nominated by the Manchester-based Skilled and Trade Division of recruitment agency, Kinetic plc,  Les has been working as a contractor with them for the past 12 years. His nomination, they said, is because of the consistently high levels of service that he has delivered for all temporary and contract engineering assignments which he has undertaken.

Because of the declining number of engineering candidates now available, businesses in this niche sector are increasingly using temporary staff such as Les to meet their needs.

Les worked for General Vacuum Equipment on four separate occasions in which time he had to work to detailed engineering assembly drawings. The work he carries out also includes pneumatic and hydraulic systems, mechanical vacuum assemblies and various one-off tasks.

John Morgan, a Consultant at Kinetic’s Skilled and Trades Division said: “Les can turn his hand to any task, sometimes being required to help strip down and load a machine for transportation and shipping; other times for checking parts against paperwork before commencing assembly.

“As this is all highly detailed work and a vital element of the company’s service offered to its clients, Les is directly adding value to the business.”

Les said the key to temporary work was making yourself adaptable to any task and in turn, he enjoys the flexibility it gives him.

Helen Reynolds, the REC’s Acting Chief Executive Officer, said: “Les has shown how being flexible and professional in a range of engineering roles can make a difference to the businesses that use his experience and skills to best effect.”
