London paediatric nurse Mary Tynan is in the running to be crowned One in a Million, the title given to the UK’s top temporary, contract or interim worker.

Mary has won the Agency Nurse of the Year category of the One in a Million Award.

Nominated by London-based recruitment agency Geneva Health, Mary has been working there for seven years making her the longest serving agency nurse on its temporary nursing bureau.

Originally from Eire, Mary came to England in 1990 in order to further her career working with children. She began at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Hackney and later worked at the Homerton Hospital in Hackney.

But she decided she no longer wanted to work night shifts so went travelling to New Zealand. There she signed up to an agency and worked there as a nurse for six months, before returning to the UK and joining Geneva.

Her current assignment is as part of the Tower Hamlets Primary Care Trust team visiting children and families in their homes and training parents and teachers in schools about children with special needs and complex care plans.

Mary enjoys being an agency nurse because of the flexibility it allows her to pursue her other interests, including sport and travel.

Alex Hall from Geneva Health said of her: “Mary is a dedicated and committed nurse. She is a real asset to the temporary services team and her efforts have reflected that.”

Helen Reynolds, the REC’s Deputy Chief Executive Officer, said: “Mary epitomises the professionalism and commitment which agency workers bring to their jobs and it also shows how they can fit in their work to suit their lifestyles.”
