Agency Driver
Simon Roe
Nominated by Driver Hire, Cheshire
Manchester driver Simon Roe has been declared one of the UK’s top temporary workers.
Simon has won the highly commended prize in the Agency Driver category of the One in a Million Award given to the UK’s top temporary worker.
Simon of Davyholme was nominated by recruitment specialist Driver Hire of Stockport for whom he has been working for three years.
He has been a regular driver for Hyde-based client Star Chaser Industries which are pioneers in “space travel for leisure”, developing a rocket which will take paying passengers into space. So for two years, Simon drove their two rockets around schools in the UK, the rockets being stowed at the back of a goods vehicle, which he was driving.
Rather than sit in the cab while Star Chaser’s staff were talking to the children about space travel, Simon decided to attend the presentations. As his knowledge increased, he asked if he could get more involved with the classroom side of the project to such an extent, he paid for his own Criminal Records Bureau investigation. All this he did for no extra pay.
Last year, Simon was part of the fleet of drivers who travelled to flood-stricken Gloucester and worked 15 hour days after tachograph regulations were suspended during this emergency.
He found himself driving an unfamiliar vehicle around the outlying villages, which were only accessible to goods vehicles. His deliveries helped reduce the misery for thousands of flood-affected people.
Philip Wallwork of Driver Hire said: “Simon is now working towards becoming a driving instructor- again self-financed- so he can help train goods vehicle drivers of the future.”
Helen Reynolds, the REC’s Deputy Chief Executive Officer, said: “Simon has shown how prepared he is to go beyond the call of duty in furthering his own knowledge and skills to enhance the lives of others.”
