  • Open an account with the DVLA, which will help provide driver licence information (apart from medical information). This is at a minimal cost and very useful to have.

  • Use the REC’s Model Terms of Business and Terms of Engagement.

  • Make sure that you are aware of the Health and Safety Requirements.

  • Subscribe to RHA, FTA and any other trade bodies.

  • Go out and shadow a driver for a day.

  • Read the trade journals such as Truck and Driver, Commercial Motor or Roadsafe

  • Attend REC / FTA / RHA meetings and conferences.

  • Keep an eye on the DTI’s website for legislative updates.

  • Investigate who your competitors are.
