The REC provide Business Support Services. Download the Free RITE Document that provides some basic information about establishing a recruitment consultancy.
All Drivers Agencies are governed by the Conduct of Employment Agencies Act Regulations.
Become a member of REC.
Ensure that you check any legislation requirements such as Drivers Hours, Tachograph laws, Licence Checks, Manual Handling and Medical requirements.
Investigate the Insurance aspect – do you need Drivers Negligence Insurance?
Be prepared to have cover 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Be aware that the Drivers recruitment market is highly competitive with a current skills shortage.
Try and employ staff with transport or haulage experience as they will be aware of the responsibility involved in supplying drivers and the consequences if not done correctly.
Open an account with the DVLA, which will help provide driver licence information (apart from medical information). This is at a minimal cost and very useful to have.
Use the REC’s Model Terms of Business and Terms of Engagement.
Make sure that you are aware of the Health and Safety Requirements.
Subscribe to RHA, FTA and any other trade bodies.
Go out and shadow a driver for a day.
Read the trade journals such as Truck and Driver, Commercial Motor or Roadsafe
Attend REC / FTA / RHA meetings and conferences.
Keep an eye on the DTI’s website for legislative updates.
Investigate who your competitors are.
